Mazda’s North American arm has unveiled a race-spec version of the new 2013 Mazda6 sedan, built to highlight the turbodiesel  SkyActiv-D option joining the US range for the first time.

The new car will make its competition debut in the 2013 Daytona 24 Hour race on January 26, where three examples will compete under the banners of SpeedSource (#70), Yellow Dragon (#00), and Freedom Autosport (#25).

Designed to compete in the new Grand-Am GX Class, the racer shares little with the production model aside from its exterior design and production-based 2.2 litre SKYACTIV-D twin-turbodiesel engine - tuned for around 300kW, up from the standard 129kW.

Underneath the skin, the 6 racer has been converted to rear wheel drive and uses a bespoke spaceframe chassis as permitted by the Grand-Am GX rules.

This combination of factory-based mechanicals and appearance with category-specific chassis is similar to that used locally by Nissan Motorsport’s new Altima V8 Supercar.
