Citroen's all-new upmarket DS5 people mover has made its debut at Shanghai this week. Speculation in the past week suggested the DS5 would look to the current C5 sedan for inspiration, but the DS5 is C-Sportlounge through-and-through.

Like the DS3 and DS4 before it, the DS5 features a long sloping roofline, a wide-open grille built around Citroen's chevron badge, unique pillar styling and a wave-like character line along its profile.

The DS5 measures 4.52m long, placing it directly between the new C4 and the C5 large sedan. The latest model in the DS line-up is 1.5 metres tall and 1.85m wide. Seating five, the DS5 offers 465 litres of rear storage space.

Inside, the sleek wagon reveals the same style-focused design as its DS stablemates, and Citroen says it took inspiration from the cockpit of an airplane in creating the flat-bottomed steering wheel and dash features, including the overhead controls.

When it hits European markets later this year, the DS5 will be the first Citroen to use the company's Hybrid4 technology, combining a 120kW 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine at the front wheels, with a 27kW electric motor powering the rear wheels.

The DS5 is likely to make its Australian debut in 2012.
