Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne and a United Auto Workers union president have confirmed a smaller Chrysler Pentastar V6 is on the way, according to industry paper Automotive News.

Bruce Baumhower, who leads the UAW in the area where the new Jeep Cherokee (Liberty in the US) is soon to start production, told the paper that the new off-roader will be offered with a 3.2 litre variant of the bent six.

The current Pentastar engine can be found bolted into a huge range of Chrylser, Dodge, Ram and Jeep vehicles, along with European-market VW Routan and Lancia Thema.

In all of these cars, the engine weighs in at 3.6 litres, with power outputs ranging from 211kW to 227kW

Baumhower also suggested that Chrysler's new ZF nine-speed automatic could be offered with the engine. The story quoted other unnamed UAW sources confirming Baumhower's claims.

Fiat-Chrysler chief Marchionne has confirmed the new Cherokee/Liberty's debut at next year's Detroit Auto Show.

For Chrysler and Fiat, the Pentastar engine was the result of a $2 billion spending program, and will eventually come in a further range of sizes, with turbocharging, direct injection and Fiat's Multiair technology.

We can likely expect to see the new engine in a Jeep Cherokee sometime before the end of 2013.
