Chevrolet’s next Corvette ZR1 will reportedly be mid-engined, making it the first Corvette to switch to the recognised ‘supercar’ layout.

A report from Motor Trend quotes “multiple sources” as confirming the switch to a mid-engined set-up. The plan, if true, is to boost the Corvette’s performance and handling.

While a mid-engined Corvette has been in the rumour mill for decades, and had been firming under Bob Lutz before GM went into bankruptcy, Chev is reportedly looking at creating two separate lines and two separate platforms - one for the C7, the other for the C8, both selling side-by-side.

The 2016 Camaro is set for an “evolutionary design”; if these reports are correct, it would sit as a 'lower-priced' model with a conventional front-engine layout.

Adding to the intrigue is a separate report earlier this year suggesting there would be no ZR1 replacement
