Cadillac is looking to boost its ranks considerably in the third decade of the 21st century, with a model offensive set to include eight new offerings.

Automobile reports that the US carmaker is targeting a broader line-up through an US$800 million investment to go after Germany’s ‘big three’ (Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW), and as such, SUVs are high on the priority list.

Among the octuplets to come out of Cadillac’s factories will reportedly be the full gamut of SUVs; new compact and midsized SUVs, a large SUV and an upper-large SUV (think Range Rover-sized).

Cadillac’s Escalade won’t be a victim of the SUV splurge however, with a new model set to continue with the body-on-frame chassis and include suspension and engine upgrades.

The carmaker will stop short of adding a model for every segment (no compact Cadillac hatch on the way), but new small and large sedans are also expected along with a four-door coupe rival to Benz’s CLA-Class.

To achieve the goal, Cadillac’s design team will no doubt be busy over the next half a decade, and they might be busier still should General Motors call upon them to deliver some new models for Australia.

Previously, Holden was set to use a mixture of GM’s models from around the world post-2017 (when local manufacturing ends), with a large portion of the range to come from Europe.

The sale of GM’s Opel and Vauxhall to France’s Groupe PSA however has thrown a spanner in the works, although European supply for the next-generation Commodore and Astra models appears safe for now.

As SUV sales in Australia continue to boom, Holden strategists will no doubt welcome a raft of new Cadillac SUV models from which to choose, and GM may be forced to look into its own cupboard if Opel and Vauxhall take different directions under their new owner.

Beyond the eight-model plan, Cadillac is also reportedly looking at plug-in hybrid variants - but only when GM is ready to offer the tech in more of its mainstream models.
