Buick's new small Verano Turbo sedan has made its US market debut this week, launching with GM's powerful 187kW and 353Nm turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder Ecotec engine.

Built on the same platform that underpins the new Opel Astra and the Holden Cruze, the front-wheel-drive Verano Turbo will be offered with a choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

GM says the direct-injected turbo engine will propel the Verano Turbo to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds - a half-second quicker than the larger Buick Regal when driven by the same engine.

The Verano is also offered in the US with a more sedate 2.4 litre direct-injected flex-fuel petrol engine, offering 130kW and 232Nm of torque.

Australia

As with the rest of the Buick range, the Verano is not expected to come to Australia.

Sharing most of its bodies and technologies with the Opel range however, Australian buyers will see elements of the Verano and Regal in Opel Astra and Insignia form.
