New technology and a slightly fresher face and tail headline the changes to the BMW M2 for 2018 as the German automaker tweaks its smallest M model in line with the broader 2 Series range.

Having only launched in 2016, the M2 could hardly be considered long-in-the-tooth, which is why BMW has taken a gentle approach with the changes, limiting the upgrades to infotainment on the inside and lighting on the outside.

The most recognisable change occurs up front, with the entry-level M2 Pure swapping its previous Xenon headlights for a set of new Bi-LED headlights while the up-spec M2 steps up further with adaptive LED headlights that feature a new lighting signature for the daytime running lights. Re-designed rear lights now feature an L-shape and are fitted with LEDs

Infotainment technology also gets a once-over with BMW’s latest-generation iDrive 6 system installed, incorporating touchscreen controls accessed via a “live-content tile interface”. iDrive also utilises voice control and a console mounted rotary controller for ease of operation.

Changes to the instrument display include additional M-specific content to be displayed while the interior trim has been lightly revised with minor detail changes to the center console and stitching being touched up.

The M2 also ditches its previous ‘return to home’ indicator and wiper stalks in favour of controls that now click into place like traditional stalks.

The 2018 changes see a slight revision to pricing, with the entry-level M2 Pure now starting from $93,300 before on-road costs, a rise of $2800, while the M2 variant costs $99,900, a rise of only $400.

The BMW M2 is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit that generates 272kW and 465Nm powering the rear wheelsa seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a six-speed manual optionally available on the M2 Pure.

The 2018 model year M2 is available from September 2017.
