BMW has redefined the concept of the teaser video, with a new clip this week revealing what looks to be an upgrade to the monstrous X6 M.

The video blurs out a number of styling details, including the headlights and taillights, and one other key element: the badge.

Pause the clip at just the right moment however, and you might make out what looks to be the rumoured X6 M550d name - making it the first BMW diesel to wear the vaunted M badge.

For its part, BMW is keeping its lips sealed on what we can expect here. Reports suggest the M550d will deliver around 373kW (500hp) and more than 800Nm of torque, courtesy of a triple-turbo six-cylinder 3.0 litre engine.

With those sorts of figures, the diesel-powered X6 M would be a solid match for the regular petrol-powered X6 M, which produces 408kW and 680Nm.

The most powerful diesel variant in the current Australian-delivered X6 range is the xDrive40d, powered by a 225kW and 600Nm straight-six.
