BMW is preparing the Coupe and Convertible versions of the 1 series range for 2014, with both reportedly set to wear 2 Series badges.

Reports of a new '2er' range follows talk of the 3 Series Coupe and Cabriolet morphing into a new 4 Series, matching a similar approach from Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

A move away from the 1 Series name for its new small coupe could also release the brand from tip-toeing around the iconic M1 nameplate with the '1 Series M Coupe' name.

The successor to the 1 Series M might therefore be known as the M2, without kicking up a fuss with traditionalists and owners of the original M1.

M2 has already been trademarked in the United States, and while that's no guarantee, it points to a possible debut in the future.

Other reports suggest the 2 series would be offered with BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system to take on Audi A3 Quattro and Mercedes Benz A-Class 4Matic variants.

The 2 is likely to share many of its engines and transmissions with the 1 Series, meaning a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic coupled to force-fed 2.0 litre fours in petrol or diesel flavours, and varying states of tune.

The range-topping M2, to come even later, is expected stick with a six-cylinder turbo unit, with two (or as has been rumoured, three) turbos with the M-DCT dual-clutch from the M3 and M5.

As the with the 1M, it won't quite be as fast as its bigger stablemate, although it will likely improve on the lively characteristics of the 1M.

The 2 series is still a long way off. Stay tuned to TMR for all the updates.
