Lexus may not be the only prestige brand preparing a new coupe hero for January's Detroit Auto Show, with new reports suggesting BMW is planning to steal the spotlight.
It is believed that BMW's top-shelf M4 coupe - destined to replace the two-door M3 - will debut in Detroit, where it would face off against the coming Lexus RC F coupe.
But, according to Britain's Auto Express, the carmaker is planning to reveal a concept version of the M4 at next month's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California.
It wouldn't be the first time BMW has used Pebble Beach to debut a new concept, with last year's show hosting the unveiling of the Z4 Zagato roadster.
And, if BMW's recent concept history is anything to go by, we can likely expect the M4 showcar to offer a near-production look at the final model bound for Detroit.
We can also expect the M4 to be a vastly different machine to the current range-topping 435i, despite the obvious styling connections.
Speaking with Auto Express, BMW's Klaus Froehlich said that around 80 percent of the M4's construction and componentry will be unique.
It's no secret that BMW's M division cuts few corners in producing its hero cars, and the M4 is expected to get a bespoke engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a unique suspension package, along with a raft of weight-reducing carbon-fibre elements.
