Rumours and reports of a powered-up version of BMW’s already swift i8 plug-in hybrid sports car continue.

A new report out of Germany this week suggests that the rumoured - codenamed ‘M100’ - will be sold as the ‘i8s’, thanks to its roots in the current i8 program.

According to Automobile magazine, ‘project i’ leaders Ulrich Kranz and former Ferrari executive Roberto Fedeli have earmarked a number of significant changes.

The new model is expected to be markedly more powerful than the 266kW i8 that recently launched in Australia, while wearing a distinctly different look.

For now, the team is believed to be tossing up between two options for the petrol half of the new model’s powertrain: a 240kW twin-turbo 2.0 litre four and a nearly 360kW inline-six.
