Technology giant Apple unveiled its new 'iOS in the Car' system this week, but one notable exclusion from the partner list was German prestige marque BMW.

Many prominent carmakers including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Hyundai and Nissan have put their hands up to adopt the new technology, but BMW reportedly isn’t among them.

Speaking with the Arnold Clark website, a spokesperson for BMW said that its current ConnectedDrive system is class-leading and works fine as a standalone system.

"We have such an advanced multimedia offering that has been in vehicles in various guises for more than a decade (so) it would not be straightforward to start changing all of the architecture of a car, as has been implied (by Apple)," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that iOS integration with a car's infotainment system was "not as simple as it sounds", adding that integration with BMW cars is unlikely to happen in the short-term.

BMW later clarified its position, saying that it's in close contact with Apple and is currently researching the requirements of integrating iOS in the Car technology into future models.

As a final decision has not yet been made, BMW was not included on the list of prominent carmakers displayed at the iOS in the Car launch.

Apple’s iOS in the Car service promises to greatly improve iPhone integration with cars, allowing drivers to access their iPhone from a dashboard screen.

The service includes Siri integration, maps and messages along with access to Twitter and Wikipedia.
