BMW will unveil an outdoorsy new concept in Germany next month, based on the Active Tourer hatch revealed in September last year.

Developed specifically "to meet the neeeds of outdoor and leisure oriented" owners, the new concept will be known as the Active Tourer Outdoor.

The carmaker has revealed little else, but connecting the dots is no challenge: while the Active Tourer is believed to preview the upcoming 1 Series GT, this new Outdoor concept suggests a high-riding crossover version may follow.

Styling for the Outdoor concept will likely build on the design of the Active Tourer, adding the usual assortment of rugged-look features: hard-wearing guards and bumpers, raised suspension and a durable interior trim.

While the 1 Series GT will be BMW's first front-wheel-drive offering, the coming concept could also debut a new all-wheel-drive option - possibly taken from beneath MINI's ALL4 models

More than a few existing crossovers are available in front-wheel-drive form only, however.

Further details are still to be revealed, but there's plenty to know about the earlier Active Tourer concept.
