BMW Australia has confirmed it will introduce a new 520d variant at the entry-level end of its 5 Series Gran Turismo range, joining the existing 530d diesel and 535i petrol flagship.

The news follows the 2010 sales debut of the 5 Series GT in Australia, and the removal last year of the 550i GT V8 model from the local line-up.

Announced internationally this week, the new 520d GT variant will draw power from the same 2.0 litre turbodiesel that drives the 520d sedan, delivering 135kW and 380Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption on the European combined cycle is listed at 5.9 l/100km, and BMW promises a 0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds.

The current 5 Series Gran Turismo range in Australia features only one diesel offering - the 530d - powered by BMW's 180kW/540Nm 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine.

Fuel consumption for the 530d is listed at 6.5 l/100km on the combined cycle, with a 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds.

New standard features across the 2012 GT range will include Driving Experience Control with ECO PRO mode, optional Active Protection and BMW Parking Assistant.

The 520d GT is expected to hit Australia from September. Watch for more details on the updated 2012 5 Series GT range in the coming months.
