TMR's spy photographers have caught a new BMW coupe in testing this week, but its exact identity is unclear. Until recently, you would have thought it obvious that what we're looking at here is the new 3 Series Coupe.

Recent reports suggest however that BMW is planning to replace the 3 badge with a 4, giving the two-door its own unique styling and a more hard-edged sporting profile.

Earlier reports also point to a new 4 Series four-door coupe, targeting Mercedes' CLS.

Whatever the outcome, it is likely at least that the car shown here is the replacement for the current 3 Series Coupe.

The new Coupe is expected to share its platform and engine range with the recently-revealed 3 Series sedan, so expect a run of turbocharged four-cylinder options, along with a top-shelf six-cylinder model.

An M4-badged version could also replace the current M3 Coupe, driven by a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that would replace the current 309kW V8 engine.
