It took an age to arrive, but according to reports from the US this week, BMW's 1 Series M Coupe will be gone again in a matter of months.

With the debut of the second-generation 1 Series range drawing closer, the current 1 M will reportedly be "a one-year car."

Speaking with The Detroit Bureau, BMW's M boss for the US market, Matt Russell, said that while the M badge could appear again with the new 1 Series, production of the current 1 M Coupe will end by December.

BMW is expected to build no more than a thousand of its baby M coupes, and only 100 of them will hit Australian roads.

With the 'regular' 1 Series range scheduled to enter its second generation in the next year, the debut of a new 1 M will likely be two or three years away.

The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is scheduled to make its Australian debut in July.
