Bentley's long-rumoured luxury SUV has reared its head this week, with the Geneva Motor Show debut of the high-riding EXP 9 F.

Offering a glimpse of the prestige carmaker's plans for the popular SUV segment, the curiously-named EXP 9 F concept looks ready to roll onto the showroom floor.

On the styling front, the EXP 9 F wears the traditional Bentley box grille, flanked by single round headlights rather than the familiar paired lamps design.

Along its profile, the big SUV carries a classic Range Rover-like profile, with a long and square roofline dropping off into a short rear deck lip, long flared rear guards, 23-inch alloy wheels and a blocky backend.

"The EXP 9 F had to represent the absolute pinnacle of the sport utility sector, setting a new benchmark for this type of vehicle," Bentley design director, Dirk van Braeckel said.

"The style had to reflect Bentley’s sporting character despite its radically different package and purpose together with sculptured, flowing surfaces in keeping with the Bentley tradition.”

Inside, the EXP 9 F offers all the Bentley hallmarks, with wood, metal and leather on every surface.

There's also a large TFT widescreen display and reversible floor mats catering to both urban and country driving.

The concept's seating layout is described as 4+1, although you wouldn't want to be the +1. The rear seats can also be folded flat, in proper wagon fashion, but if you keep them upright, you have the benefit of bespoke picnic compartments in the rear.

Details of the EXP 9 F's platform have not been revealed (we suspect there is some Audi underneath), but Bentley has confirmed that its twin-turbo 6.0 litre W12 engine and eight-speed auto are featured.

In production form, we can likely expect the W12 engine to be joined by the company's new 4.0 litre V8, and a hybrid option.
