If you've got the feeling you've seen this one before, relax. Audi's hardtop Urban Concept was teased last week, and today the German carmaker wants you to know that a Spyder variant will debut alongside it at Frankfurt in September.

Apart from the absent roof, the Urban Concept Spyder is identical to its 'Sportback' sibling, inside and out.

There's an open-wheeler design on the outside, with the ultra-slim body leading to a lopsided 1+1 fixed seating arrangement in the cabin.

Audi is still holding out on the two electric motors that power the Urban Concept(s), but it is expected that the motors will either be mounted one at each axle, or inside two of the wheels.

Like BMW's i cars, the Urban Concept features a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer body, built on an aluminium platform.

It is unclear at this stage if Audi plans to put the Urban Concept into production, although it is unlikely that the open-wheel design would get far with pedestrian safety compliance.

However, the concepts may yet preview either a return of the ultra-efficient A2, or another model in upcoming e-tron range.

Watch for the Urban Concept at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.
