Audi is set to march into Frankfurt next month with a troop of new S-badged performance models, including the long-anticipated S6 and S6 Avant, the S7 Sportback and the giant S8.

Arriving hot on the heels of the updated V6-powered S5 range, this new quartet of Audi S cars is strictly a turbocharged V8 affair.

2012 Audi S6 Sedan and S6 Avant

For the S6 Sedan and Avant, power is provided by a 309kW version of Audi's 4.0 litre TFSI V8, replacing the naturally-aspirated 5.2 litre V10 of the previous model.

With 550Nm of torque coming online between 1400 and 5300rpm, the new engine propels the S6 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, and the S6 Avant in 4.9 seconds.

Thanks to a cylinder deactivation system and its smaller size, fuel consumption is also improved, dropping by as much as 25 percent to 9.7 l/100km for the sedan and 9.8 for the wagon.

The S6 is fitted standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, with 20-inch hoops available as an option. Braking is managed by larger performance discs and calipers, and carbon ceramic discs are optional.

An adaptive air suspension system with variable damping is also standard.

Audi's familiar S styling is featured all-round, setting it apart from the A6 with its own grille and bumper design, S trim in the cabin, and sports seats and steering wheel.

2012 Audi S7 Sportback

The S7 Sportback is powered by the same 4.0 litre TFSI V8, its 308kW and 550Nm pushing the big four-door coupe to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds.

As with the S6, the S7 Sportback gets an adaptive air-

suspension system, along with larger brakes and optional carbon ceramic discs. Larger 19-inch wheels are standard, with 20-inch wheels on the options list.

For the S6 models and the S7 Sportback, Audi's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel-drive system are standard.

2012 Audi S8

Audi's S stand at Frankfurt will be rounded out by the big V8 S8, driven by a more highly-tuned version of the turbocharged mill powering the S6 and S7 models.

In S8 form, the big eight-cylinder turbo heart delivers 382kW and 650Nm of torque, channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Despite its mammoth dimensions, the S8 uses its extra power (52kW more than the previous model) to hit 100km/h in 4.2 seconds. That's quicker even than the S6 and S7.

Fuel consumption for the V8 engine is also significantly better than its predecessor, listed at 10.2 l/100km, compared to 13.2 l/100km for the V10.

Big 20-inch wheels are standard for the five metre-long S8, with other S features including the usual upgrades: a new grille and bumper design, sports seats, S accents and a sports steering wheel.

Australia

An Australian debut for the new S models has yet to be confirmed, but with European deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2012, we can expect the second half.
