Since Audi's first-ever Q5 SUV broke cover, rumours have persisted that a hot RS version would eventually join the range. Now it looks as though that day is close to arriving.

The UK’s Autocar quotes sources close to Audi who say the upcoming second generation Q5 will feature an RS variant with more than 336kW.

The new variant could arrive as early as next year, and may share some of its DNA with the fourth-generation RS 4 and the second-generation RS 5.

The trio is said to be in development together, which may result in shared engines, all-wheel-drive systems and S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

Power may come from a 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, which fans will see later this year in the RS 4 and 5 and which replaces the naturally-aspirated 4.2 litre V8.
