Jeep's Wrangler off-roader, updated earlier this year, has been given a 4-Star crash safety rating in a new round of tests by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
The Wrangler's less-than-perfect result means that Jeep is still yet to feature a 5-Star offering in its Australian line-up, with the new Grand Cherokee and refreshed Compass also carrying 4-Star ratings.
The popular weekender achieved a score of 10.51 out of 16 in ANCAP's offset crash test, although the results show that the passenger compartment maintained its shape, keeping the potential for life-threatening injuries low.
The side impact test saw the Wrangler achieve a default 16 out of 16, and protection from serious leg injury was rated 'Marginal'.
Standard safety features in the Wrangler include dual front airbags, while side airbags - available only for front occupants - remain an optional extra.
Jeep has confirmed however that the side airbags will soon be fitted as standard equipment, although the Wrangler's ANCAP score won't change.
Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard, and an advanced seat belt reminder is fitted to the driver seat.
