ANCAP: 5 Stars For i40 Tourer And Cruze Hatch, 2 Stars For Chery J11

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program has announced 5-Star crash safety ratings today for the new Hyundai i40 Tourer and the upcoming Holden Cruze Hatch.

The i40 Tourer's score has been adopted by ANCAP after assessing tests carried out by Euro NCAP. Both organisations use the same test criteria.

The Cruze Hatch picks up its 5-Star score based on the top marks of the current Cruze sedan range.

The Chery J11, Australia's most affordable SUV, managed only a 2-Star rating - the lowest score of any tested vehicle in the Compact SUV segment.

The J11's score is based on a front offset crash test only however, with a side-impact related recall campaign causing further tests to be postponed.

“Under ANCAP's rating system, the poor result in the frontal offset test restricts the Chery J11 to a maximum 2-star rating – irrespective of the outcome of the side-impact test," ANCAP Chair Lauchlan McIntosh said.

"Due to the potential for delays resulting from the recall campaign, it was in the interests of consumers that ANCAP publishes this 2-Star result."

The J11 scored just two out of 16 in the offset crash test. "The passenger compartment lost structural integrity and there was excessive pedal displacement. Protection from serious chest, leg and foot injury was poor for the driver," the test report reads.

Mr McIntosh said that although side-impact tests will be carried out when the recall campaign is complete, the outcome of that test will not be enough to alter the current 2-Star rating.
