ANCAP 5 Stars: 2012 Toyota Aurion, Suzuki Swift, Kia Rio, 4 For Compass
A new round of ANCAP crash-safety testing has seen 5-Star ratings awarded to the all-new 2012 Toyota Aurion (launching in Australia this week), along with Suzuki's new Swift light hatch.

A new round of ANCAP crash-safety testing has seen 5-Star ratings awarded to the all-new 2012 Toyota Aurion (launching in Australia this week), along with Suzuki's new Swift light hatch.
The updated-for-2012 Jeep Compass has picked up a 4-Star rating, while Mahindra's ageing Pik Up utility has managed only a 3-Star result.
The Aurion's score is the result of local crash testing by the Australian New Car Assessment Program, continuing the previous model's top-shelf safety rating.
Standard safety features fro the large sedan include dual front airbags, side airbags, side curtains and driver knee airbag.
Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC) and automatic headlights are also standard. Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats, and pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts.
The 2012 Suzuki Swift also picks up a 5-Star sticker, with standard safety features including dual front airbags, driver knee airbags, side airbags and side curtains.
ABS, EBD and ESC are also standard, and intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats. Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts, and a three point seat belt is fitted to the centre rear seat.
Rounding out the 5-Star awards are the sedan and three-door versions of the new Kia Rio, following the 5-Star rating already awarded to the five-door.

The refreshed Jeep Compass managed a 4-Star rating, with ANCAP describing "a respectable level of occupant protection" for the midsized family mover.
Tested by Euro NCAP, the Compass' rating applies to 4x4 variants with a 2.4 litre petrol or 2.2 litre diesel engine and six airbags.
Dual front airbags and side curtains are standard equipment, along with ABS and ESC. The vehicle tested has side thorax airbags for the front seats, and this 4-Star score applies to variants with this feature.
ANCAP said however that even without these additional airbags, it can still be expected to achieve a 4-Star rating.
Mahindra's Pik up achieved only a 3-Star rating, which applies to dual cab 4x4 Pik Ups built from January 2012, when several production changes were introduced.
Dual front airbags, ABS and EBD are standard, and ESC is not available. Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts, but there are no top tether anchorages for child restraints, making this vehicle unsuitable for transporting children under the age of four.
Earlier dual-cab variants have a 2-Star ANCAP rating.
