Two of 2012's first new cars for Australia have picked up top safety scores from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) this week: the all-new Honda Civic sedan, and Hyundai's Veloster sports car.

The new year also marks the inclusion of pedestrian protection into ANCAP's overall scoring system.

2012 Honda Civic Sedan

The new Civic, which will go on sale in Australia in the coming weeks, was tested in Australia by ANCAP.

The test car performed well in both occupant and pedestrian protection, with the latter achieving the highest possible mark of "Good".

“With the inclusion of pedestrian protection ratings into the overall rating from 2012, Honda should be congratulated on achieving ANCAP’s highest result in that aspect of the testing,” ANCAP Chair Lauchlan McIntosh said.

“Pedestrian protection is an area that has not been well addressed amongst the current fleet so Honda has thrown out a challenge to other vehicle manufacturers,” he said.

The Civic achieved 13.91 out of 16 in the offset crash test, with the passenger compartment holding its shape "well". A slight risk of serious chest and leg injury for the driver and front passenger was recorded.

A full 16 points were also achieved in the side impact, and the maximum two points were awarded in the side pole test.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains, antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats. Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash.

2012 Hyundai Veloster

Hyundai's sharp new Veloster sports hatch will hit the Australian market this week, and it will be carrying a 5 Star ANCAP safety award when it does.

To achieve this score, the European-market Veloster was tested by ANCAP's European partner, Euro NCAP.

After analysis of the test and of details provided by Hyundai Australia, ANCAP has approved the score for the local market.

The Veloster scored a near-maximum score of 15.47 out of 16 in the offset crash test, with a light risk of serious leg injury for the driver and passenger.

A full 16 points were awarded in the side impact test, and the maximum two points were achieved in the side pole test.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains, antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats. Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash.
