The Ford Mustang has been declared the best-selling sports car of 2016 - not just in its home market of America, but across the globe.
For the last 50 years Mustang has held the best-seller title in the United States, but limited availability outside of North America meant that the global title was out of reach.
The current generation car, the first truly global Mustang, is now sold in 140 countries and is offered officially for the first time in key areas like Europe and China, as well as becoming an instant hit for Ford Australia - giving traditional popular models like the Focus and Territory a challenge, though not quite surpassing them by year’s end.
Vehicle registration data released by IHS Markit reveals that 150,000 Mustangs found homes around the planet in 2016 - a step-up of around six percent compared to 2015 - with 45,000 Mustangs sold in markets outside the United States.
