Acura, Honda's luxury arm, has taken the 2012 Civic Sedan and dressed it up to make it the ILX luxury small sedan.

External differences are fairly extensive and not limited to the usual wheels, bumpers and lights. The ILX gets a unique set of front and rear sheetmetal panels, and a bolder crisper design that also necessitates new door skins.

The roof and door aperture dimensions are shared with the Civic sedan, but from the outside the ILX looks like a wholy different model.

Powertrain options are expected to include a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol automatic, a 2.4 litre petrol manual and a 1.5 litre petrol-electric hybrid - which will be Acura's first hybrid model.

The interior has yet to be revealed, but feature-wise the ILX is expected to make use of a push-button ignition, proximity key, internet radio and a range of advanced connectivity tech.

Although technically a concept, little is expected to change between the ILX 'concept' currently on show at Detroit and the production version that's due towards the end of the first quarter, 2012.
