The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme has announced 5-Star safety ratings for the all-new Yaris and C-Class Coupe, but three other new models have fallen short of the mark.

The top score for Mercedes-Benz' C-Class Coupe follows its August sales debut and is based on ANCAP's assessment of the  car's Euro NCAP test results.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, side airbags, head-protecting side curtains and driver knee airbag.

Antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, and electronic stability control are also standard, along with a number of pre-crash systems.

ANCAP has specified that the score applies only to the 2.2 litre C 220 CDI variant, although details for the other variants will be confirmed soon.

The new Toyota Yaris was also tested by Euro NCAP, with both the five- and three-door variants achieving the top 5-Star rating for the Australian market.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, side airbags, side curtains and a driver knee airbag. Antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist and electronic stability control are also standard.

Missing out on the top 5-Star score were the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, the MINI Countryman and the brand-new Range Rover Evoque.

“ANCAP 5 star ratings are now the standard and it is quickly becoming the case that even a good 4 star rating may not be good enough in a competitive market," ANCAP Chairman Lachlan McIntosh said.

In the case of the Evoque, the vehicle is described as well-equipped and scored well in most areas, but with a score of 12.39 out of 16 in the offset crash test, a 5-Star rating was not achieved.

A minimum of 12.5 is required.

The Grand Cherokee is also well-equipped, but a low offset crash test score of just 9.95 kept the big SUV from obtaining the top score.

The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test however, and the maximum two points in the pole test.

The Countryman's test came undone in the offset crash test also, scoring 11.89 out of 16. The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test and a further two points in the pole test.

All three cars were tested by Euro NCAP.

“Consumers can also opt for a 5 star used late model car if their budget does not run to a new car. Fleet buyers have been purchasing 5 star cars for several years and these are now appearing in numbers in the used car market," Mr McIntosh said.
