Suzuki is expected to gift its Swift Sport hot hatch with a turbocharged powerplant when its all-new replacement arrives next year.

Due to appear in the latter half of 2017, Suzuki’s next generation Swift Sport will, according to a report in UK outlet Autocar, adopt a high-tune version of the Vitara S Turbo’s 1.4 litre turbocharged inline four (below), with outputs in excess of that car’s 103kW and 220Nm.

Suzuki could even put the Swift Sport on a diet to take its kerb weight below one tonne. The current Swift Sport manual weighs in at an already-svelte 1060kg, over 100kg lighter than all of its competitors.

With the Swift Sport’s rivals in the light hot hatch segment having all made the transition to turbo power years ago, Suzuki has plenty of catching up to do.

The current-generation Swift Sport makes do with a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre inline four with 100kW and 160Nm, well behind the outputs of segment competitors like the Ford Fiesta ST (134kW/240Nm) and Volkswagen Polo GTI (141kW/320Nm).

Lesser models in the Swift range are expected to use a version of the 1.0 litre turbo petrol that’s set to make its first appearance in this market in the Baleno small hatch later this year.

The Japanese automaker has yet to confirm any details of its upcoming replacement for the six year-old Swift, though computer-generated images of the all-new model were leaked from a dealer presentation earlier this year (above).
