Mercedes-AMG's top-shelf S-Class coupe and convertible models have recevied new engine options as part of an update for the 2018 model-year.
The German carmaker will drop the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 currently used by the S-Class two-door pair, replacing it with the more efficient 4.0-litre motor used in models ranging from the compact C 63 sedan to the supercar-baiting Mercedes-AMG GT R coupe.
The new motor under the bonnet of the S 63 coupe offers 450kW of power and 900Nm of torque - 20kW more than the outgoing engine, as well as improved fuel economy of 9.3L/100km thanks to a new nine-speed automatic transmission.
At the top of the range, the S 65 coupe and convertible retain the 6.0-litre V12 twin-turbo engine that sends 463kW and 1000Nm to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission.
