Just as the powertrain for the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok is set to receive a sizeable upgrade courtesy of a range of powerful new turbo diesel V6 engines, the interior is also set to be transformed.

When Volkswagen first announced the facelifted Amarok, the focus was on the engines, and while a new dashboard design was promised, it wasn’t shown.

That’s now changed, with Volkswagen offering the first single image and initial details of the interior of its new workhorse.

While the Amarok arrived as a breath of fresh air in the light commercial segment, Volkswagen has gone back to the drawing board for the redesigned dash, and returned with an even more passenger car-like treatment.

The horizontally-oriented dashboard design features new ventilation outlets, a dividing trim-strip, and a clear definition between infotainment and ventilation controls.

Smartphone integration, with a touchscreen interface joins the Amarok’s list of capabilities, as does DAB+ digital radio, Guide & Inform online navigation, and App Connect.

At the helm the driver gets a redesigned multi-function steering wheel, and a new instrument cluster. The top spec Aventura model also comes with sports pedals, a 3D colour instrument display, and gearshift paddles as standard.

Volkswagen has also touched on seat comfort, describing new ergoComfort electrically adjustable front seats, with optional 14-way adjustment that puts some luxury cars to shame, including adjustable bolsters, seat depth and lumbar support.

Another deviation from the tough-truck norm is the option of Nappa leather seat trim, along with dual-zone climate control on high-grade models.

Although final Australian pricing and specifications are yet to be revealed, the updated Amarok is set to reach Australian showrooms before the end of the year, with local information expected to be released closer to launch.
