Four years after its launch, Toyota's popular 86 sports coupe has finally received its first substantial update.

And it's not a modest refresh either - nearly everything has been tweaked, from the bumpers, lights and wheels to interior trims, suspension and the engine.

The visual changes aren't mild either. The front bumper adopts a wide-mouthed look with an air dam that stetches nearly the full width of the car, the front fender "vent" panels no longer feature a stylised "86" logo, the frotnt and rear lamps get new lenses and LED elements and the rear bumper is restyled to match the front.

The high-spec alloy wheels get a brand new design as well, though it's unclear whether the low-spec 16-inch wheels get the same treatment.

Spring and damper rates have been altered, though Toyota hasn't detailed exactly how much or why. The addition of hill start assist should aid drivability in manual models.
