Although its development took place at the Nurburgring, Britain’s Brooklands circuit played host to the unveiling of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R, The new performance halo for Mercedes-Benz’ performance arm.

Like the AMG GT S available in Australia, the GT R runs a twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine, however the heat has been turned up from 375kW and 650Nm to a vastly more-brutal 430kW and 700Nm.

That’s enough to slingshot the GT R from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the GT S.

But straight line speed is only part of the story.

The GT’s aerodynamics package has also be fettled to suit, and the suspension modified to make the GT R’s on-track performance match its aggressive looks.

Taking cues from the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race special, the GT R wears a new front bumper, with a vertically finned and reshaped grille, enlarged lower intakes, and active aero elements.

At the rear a new double-diffuser and tall rear aerofoil combine to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and increase downforce by 155kg at high speed for optimal grip. Front and rear guards are also up to 57mm fatter to house the 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels and increased track widths.

Mechanically the GT R features nine-step adjustable traction control, electronically controlled adjustable coil-over suspension, and active rear wheel steering.

“With the new AMG GT R, we have reached the next level of driving performance, Thomas Weber, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars development said.

“This road-going sports car with motor-racing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an ultimate driving experience that allows people to feel our motorsport origins in every fibre.”

Other high performance features include an electronically actuated limited slip rear differential integrated into the compact rear transaxle, optional carbon ceramic brakes, aluminium, carbon fivre, and composite material body construction, and a revised seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

Of course, and AMG model wouldn’t be the same without a signature soundtrack, and to that end a lightweight thin-walled stainless steel exhaust with titanium silencer ensures a roaring V8 soundtrack and a unique look thanks to a large centre-outlet and two smaller outboard exhaust tips.

Order books are set to open in Europe by November this year, with a wider global launch, including Australia, set for later in 2017.
