British supercar firm, McLaren, has unveiled its latest model, presenting a new convertible version of its entry-level Sports Series of cars.

The 570S Spider arrives as the third body style for the Sport Series range, joining the 570S and more spacious 570GT coupes.

The 570S Spider arrives as the cheapest way yet into a McLaren drop-top, though its affordability is relative, with pricing starting from $436,750 plus on-road costs in Australia.

The 570S Spider also arrives just in time to fill the gap in McLaren’s range left by the more powerful and more expensive 650S Spider, and should help tide over supercar loving sunseekers until McLaren’s latest Super Series car, the 720S gets its own Spider version.

Despite its ‘entry level’ tag, the 570S Spider is far from pedestrian, with 419kW and 600Nm produced by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8. That gives the 570S Spider a rather brisk 0-100km/h time of just 3.2 with a top speed of 315 km/h with the roof open, or an even headier 328 km/h with it up.

McLaren describes the Spider as "a convertible without compromise", with a weight penalty of just 46 kilograms when compared to the coupe, and rigidity that is claimed to match that of the fixed roof Sport Series cars thanks to McLaren’s MonoCell II carbon fibre chassis.

The two-piece composite roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 40km/h, with the operation taking just 15 seconds to complete. The public will be given their first look at the 570S Spider at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with customer deliveries for the UK to start in August.
