Hyundai Santa Fe buyers can now opt for V6 petrol power, with the carmaker reintroducing the six-pot engine to the large SUV range as a permanent option.

In doing so, Hyundai has effectively made the limited-run Santa Fe 30 edition - offered last year to celebrate its 30th anniversary in Australia - a permanent member of the Santa Fe family.

Called the Santa Fe Active X, the new offering stands alone as the only front-wheel drive model in the range, making it the most road-biased Santa Fe.

Power comes from a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine that produces 199kW and 318Nm, paired to a six-speed automatic.

Prices start from $40,990 before on-road costs, which places the Active X in between the base all-wheel drive, 2.4-litre petrol-powered Active manual and Active auto variants.

Hyundai has arguably counteracted the lack of all-wheel drive by packing the Active X with an impressive list of standard safety equipment.

On the outside the Active X scores dark grey 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, rear privacy glass, rain sensing wipers, roof rails, front and rear fog lights, auto headlights and heated wing mirrors.

Inside, the Active X gets a seven-inch touchscreen which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a leather appointed steering wheel, heated front seats, tyre pressure monitoring and a cooled glove compartment.

The third row also gets its own air conditioning vents, but does miss out on curtain airbags which only cover the first and second rows.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Active X is on sale now.
