After what seems like a painfully long wait for Aussie motoring enthusiasts, Ford’s hottest-ever hot hatch, the Focus RS, has now gone on sale.

Featuring a 2.3 litre four-cylinder engine and twin-scroll turbocharger producing 257kW of power and 440Nm of torque, with a 470Nm overboost function, the new Focus RS isn’t shy when it comes to performance.

The Ecoboost engine itself comes from the Mustang, with a common block and crankshaft, however the Focus RS steps up with more power and torque, as well as a more vocal twin-pipe exhaust.

Power is put to the ground through an all-wheel-drive system featuring Dynamic Torque Vectoring, allowing torque to be shifted front to rear as well as side-to-side.

Sure to appeal to true driving enthusiasts, the Focus RS is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission only. The sprint from 0-100 km/h takes place in a claimed 4.7 seconds.

Four selectable drive modes allow the driver to choose from Normal, Sport, Track, and Drift driving characteristics, affecting the tune of the steering, exhaust, and stability control systems, with independently adjustable two-mode suspension and a Launch Control function that can be operated in any mode.

Brake hardware includes 350mm ventilated front discs clamped by four-piston Brembo calipers up front, with 302mm solid discs at the rear.

Inside the Focus RS comes with a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, deeply bolstered partial leather Recaro seats, blue interior highlights, and Ford’s Sync2 infotainment system, which even understands the voice command, “Find a race track” to take you to your closest public race circuit.

Other standard Focus RS features include a unique aggressive body kit, 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon HID headlights, keyless entry with push-button start, dual-zone climate control, nine-speaker audio, cruise control with speed limiter, and a rear view camera.

An optional Performance Wheel Pack is also available, with lighter 19-inch forged alloy wheels, finished in low-gloss black, and shod with 235/35 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, priced at $2500.

Pricing for the Focus RS starts from $50,990, but as reported previously by TMR the waiting list has pushed out beyond the end of 2017, meaning interested buyers who haven’t already placed their order could be facing a long wait to take delivery of Ford’s new hyper-hatch.

We’ll have first drive impressions of the new Focus RS soon, so be sure to check back and read all about it.
