The big third-generation VW Touareg, launched globally in 2010, will offer an improved diesel when its latest update hits Australia in the first half of next year.

Volkswagen has this week handed down new details for the refreshed SUV, following its unveiling at April’s Beijing Auto Show.

For 2015, the Touareg’s 3.0 litre six-cylinder diesel will dial power in the V6 TDI up to 193kW, compared to 180kW in the current range.

Torque remains steady at 550Nm in the V6TDI, while the 150TDI keeps its 150kW/400Nm figures.

Fuel use is also improved, with both tunes now listing consumption at 6.6 l/100km - down from 7.4 in the V6TDI and 7.2 with the 150TDI.

Carbon emissions have likewise dropped, now listed at 173g/km, compared to 190 and 196g/km in the current models.
