Volkswagen's coming CrossBlue Coupe concept has surfaced online, mere hours since the carmaker released a pair of streamlined teaser sketches.

The photos reveal a more practical shape than expected, suggesting this 'Coupe' may loosely preview the next Tiguan. (Getting loose with the 'coupe' idea there VW, and Kia - Ed.)

With the current facelifted Tiguan now into its sixth year, a replacement - riding on Volkswagen's new MQB platform - cannot be far away.

The new showcar builds on the style of last year's Cross Coupe and CrossBlue concepts, introducing a more market-ready design that shouldn't change much before production begins.

As with BMW's 4 Series Coupe concept, we can likely expect the showy bumpers to be softened before debut, and smaller wheels will replace the concept's 20-inch hoops.

The CrossBlue Coupe wears a more sporting look than the current Tiguan, with a rising waist and tapered roofline, deep character lines and a more aggressive snout.

Power in the concept is reportedly provided by a turbocharged V6 and two electric motors, producing a combined 310kW and claiming a 0-100km/h time of around 5.9 seconds.

Thanks to the electric motors, fuel consumption is expected to be no greater than 3.0 l/100km, and an electric-only driving range of 33km is also reported.

Watch for more details at next week's Shanghai Auto Show.
