The Skoda Rapid has finally arrived in Australia, with sharp entry-level pricing of $18,990 making the Rapid 77TSI the most affordable European small car currently on the market.

Built on an adaptation of the VW Polo's platform and assembled in the Czech Republic, the Rapid is offered in two model grades, Ambition and Elegance, and with two petrol engines - a 77kW 1.2 litre turbo, and a 90kW 1.4 litre turbo.

Only one bodystyle is on offer, with Skoda Australia opting for the five-door Spaceback body instead of the sedan-esque Rapid that's also sold in Europe (which has a sedan silhouette but utilises a full tailgate).

Engine Options

Kicking off the range is the Rapid Spaceback 77TSI, which is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Power for this model tops out at 77kW at 5000rpm, and peak torque of 175Nm is available between 1550-4100rpm.

It's not especially quick with a 0-100km/h time of 10.2 seconds, but its claimed average fuel consumption of 5.2 l/100km makes it one of the thriftier small cars out there.
