UPDATE: Mini has now added the even cheaper 'One' to its Australian Cooper range. Details here.

MINI's new Cooper hatch hits Australia this week, kicking off with a sharp $26,650 starting point - marking a handy $5000 off the outgoing model’s entry price.

The local launch of the new Cooper, the third generation of the popular hatch since its rebirth under BMW in 2000, follows a global unveiling at November’s LA Auto Show.

The new Cooper is hitting Australia in three trim grades: Cooper petrol, Cooper D diesel and the hot-hatch Cooper S.

The price cuts continue through the range, with the $31,800 Cooper D now $3000 cheaper than before, and the $36,950 Cooper S reduced by $3750.

MINI says that despite its lower list prices, the new Cooper is a more refined and feature-rich offering than ever before.
