Mazda Australia has announced a number of safety upgrades for the 2014 Mazda6 range, with the full range of active safety features that were previously only standard in the range-topping Atenza now available in an optional safety package for the Mazda6 Sport, Touring and GT.

The Mazda6 Safety Pack bundles a blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, auto-dimming rear view mirror and Mazda's Smart City Brake Support system.

Smart City Brake, which can automatically avoid a collision when speeds are between 4 and 30km/h, is a new feature for the Mazda6.

The blind spot monitoring system alerts the driver if another vehicle is in the car's blind spot when merging, while rear cross traffic alert tells the driver if other cars are approaching from the side when reverse gear is engaged.

For the Sport and Touring grades, the Safety Pack costs $1490 on top of the retail price. Due to the auto-dimming rear view mirror already being standard on the GT, the Safety Pack adds only $1290 to that model's pricetag.

The addition of Smart City Brake Support to the Atenza's standard spec list adds $400 to that model's retail price.

Cargo space has also been improved for the 2014 Mazda6 range.
