Chinese automaker Chery has added stability control to its J11 compact SUV, bumping up the price by a grand to $18,990.
Despite the price hike, the J11 remains the cheapest SUV on the market, albeit one that's front-drive only and is equipped with just two airbags as standard.
And while the pricetag has grown, the engine has shrunk. The new 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated petrol four-cylinder produces 93kW and 160Nm, a reduction of 9kW and 22Nm from the outgoing 2.0 litre four-pot.
The base transmission remains a five-speed manual, but those looking to spend an extra $2000 can opt for a CVT automatic gearbox with seven virtual 'gears' - a solid step up from the old J11's four-speed conventional auto.
Fuel economy has improved to 7.4 l/100km for the manual and 8.6 l/100km for the auto, down from 8.9 l/100km for the previous J11 auto and manual.
Besides the dual front airbags and new stability control system, other standard safety equipment for the J11 includes reversing parking sensors with a distance display, hill-hold assist (manual only), ABS, EBD.
ANCAP currently rates the J11 as offering two out of five stars for crash safety.
