BMW has rounded out its local 2 Series Coupe line-up with the addition of the mid-range 228i model, now in Australian showrooms.

Priced from $64,400 the new 228i enters the range above the entry 220i petrol and 220d diesel models, bridging the price and performance gap to the hero M235i.

Driven by the same 2.0 litre turbo four that powers the larger 328i Sedan and 428i Coupe, the 228i could prove to be the sweet spot in the 2 Series range.

Power from the turbo four-cylinder engine is rated at 180kW and 350Nm, marking a neat increase on the 135kW and 270Nm offered with the 220i.

(For those keeping score, the 220d offers 135kW and 380Nm, while the top M235i model boasts a hefty 240kW and 450Nm with its big turbo six.)

BMW promises a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds with the 228i in auto form, shaving nearly two seconds from the 220i but and falling just 0.9 seconds shy of the M235i’s sprint.

The 228i is matched to an eight-speed sports auto as standard - including shift paddles and launch control - and a six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option.

Fuel consumption with the eight-speed auto is listed at 6.3 l/100km.
