Smart, Mercedes-Benz' microcar offshoot, has soldiered on with the diminutive second-generation fortwo since 2007, meaning a new model should be just around the corner.

Or is it? These spy photos indicate that smart's only model offering is set to receive a substantial front-end makeover, but the rest of the car's body will carry over virtually untouched for the 2013 model year.

A Brabus version will again appear in the fortwo line-up, shown here with the requisite big wheels.

The front grille will be updated, the bumpers reshaped and the smart badge will migrate from the bonnet to the grille.

The Mitsubishi-sourced three-cylinder powertrains may undergo some minor updates to improve refinement and efficiency as well.

Due debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and go on sale sometime before the end of 2012, the facelifted fortwo will carry on until a full replacement arrives - possibly more than two years from now.

The third-generation fortwo will likely borrow many of its styling cues from the 2011 smart forvision concept.

As part of the 2010 partnership between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance, the next fortwo will also share its platform with the upcoming Renault Twingo replacement, and may use Nissan-sourced three-cylinder engines.
