Skoda has pulled the wraps from its new 2013 Octavia, revealing the final look of the third-generation small car.

As expected, the new model draws on the looks of the smaller Rapid, wearing a no-nonsense suit of sharp lines and understated modern features.

The latest update to Skoda's signature grille design dominates the front end, flanked by new Audi-like headlights and a wide lower grille with integrated foglight frames.

The theme continues at the rear end, with tail-lights again reminiscent of Audis past (the Typ 4F A6 in particular), while adopting the same chiseled edges previewed by the earlier VisionD concept.

Built on the same MQB platform that underpins the new Golf and Audi's new A3 range, the 2013 Octavia is larger all-round than its predecessor.

At 4659mm long and 1814mm wide, the small car has been stretched by 90 and 45mm respectively. The wheelbase is also longer, growing 108mm to 2686mm.

Inside, the Octavia gains 39mm in front elbow room, and 26mm in rear elbow room. Rear storage is also among the greatest in the segment, listed at 590 litres.

The cabin of the 2013 model brings a more upmarket look to the Skoda range while holding to the typical Volkswagen Group style, with minimal highlights and a largely black appearance.

New features in the cabin include an upgraded infotainment package, and depending on the specification, there is also Adaptive Cruise Assistant and road-sign recognition.

Intelligent Light Assistant is also featured - essentially an automatic high-beam control - along with Driving Mode Selection and a panoramic sunroof.

Engine options will include a range of eight petrol and diesel engines, all turbocharged.

Among them will be am 89kW 1.4 litre petrol, a 131kW 1.8 litre petrol, and an 81kW 1.6 diesel - the latter returning fuel figures as low as 3.4 l/100km.

Manual and DSG automatic transmissions will be offered, and depending on the market, all-wheel-drive options will also be available.

Skoda has confirmed that a wagon version of the new Octavia, along with the range-topping 2.0 litre turbocharged Octavia RS, will debut later in 2013.

Australia

The new Octavia is scheduled for its global debut at March's Geneva Motor Show, with an Australian debut likely to occur in the second half of 2013.
