Renault has whipped the covers off its new Clio wagon, revealing it to the press at the Paris Motor Show this week.

The compact Clio Estate is slated to go on sale in mainland Europe in the first quarter of 2013, with pricing and precise specification yet to be announced.

For now though, Renault has confirmed that the Clio Estate shares the same wheelbase as the five-door Clio hatch, with the only major dimensional change being a substantial increase in rear overhang from 201mm to 823mm.

It's enough to swell boot capacity to a full 430 litres with the rear seats in place - a big improvement on the hatch's 300 litre boot volume.

In addition to the 60/40 split rear seats, the front seat backrest folds down to maximise the little Clio's load carrying ability. A lower loading lip height also boosts usability.

In Europe, the Clio Estate will be sold with a 66kW 0.9 litre three-cylinder engine, or an 88kW 1.2 litre turbocharged inline four. At this stage, it's unclear if a diesel will be offered.
