2013 Mazda CX-5 Gets 2.5 Petrol Engine For Australia

Mazda Australia has confirmed its top-selling CX-5 SUV is to get a larger 2.5 litre petrol engine (the same unit featured in the new Mazda6 range) for its AWD models.

The more powerful SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre engine will replace the existing 2.0 litre option in all-wheel-drive Maxx, Maxx Sport and GT trim grades. Front-wheel-drive petrol models will continue with the 2.0 engine.

Producing 138kW and 250Nm of torque, the 2.5 engine marks a significant increase in power over the 2.0 litre mill, which offers 113kW and 198Nm in AWD models. 

“The opportunity to introduce a more powerful All-Wheel Drive petrol model will cement the CX-5 as a leader in the popular medium SUV segment,” Mazda Australia's Alastair Doak said.

The new engine's figures also represent a 15 percent increase in power and 22 percent increase in torque, when compared to the 2.5 litre engine of the superseded CX-7 SUV.

Exact fuel consumption figures in CX-5 form are still to be confirmed, although Mazda promises results better than 8.0 l/100km - at least 15 percent better than the old 2.5 CX-7. 

Depending on specification, the addition of the larger petrol engine will expand the CX-5 range's options to three engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.
