Mazda's BT-50 pickup has boosted its credentials this week with the introduction of increased towing capacity for 4x2 Hi-Rider and 4x4 models this week.

Following similar changes to its Ford Ranger twin last year, the towing capacity for those models in the BT-50 range has grown from 3350 to 3500kg.

Along with the Ranger and Holden's new Colorado, the BT-50's new tow rating makes it a segment leader.

Gross Combined Mass rises to 6000kg - an increase of 50kg - and the down ball rating grows by 15kg to 350kg. The increases are all thanks to chassis-strengthening measures introduced this year.

The enhancement applies to models powered by the big 3.2 litre MX-CD turbodiesel engine, which delivers 147kW and 470Nm of torque.

Pricing for the BT-50 range remains unchanged, with the towing capacity upgrade coming at no extra cost.

Availability is from January production, with updated models appearing in showrooms over the coming weeks.

The Mazda BT-50 is a TMR Best Buy award winning model.
