Volkswagen has pulled the covers from its new flagship in the Golf Cabriolet range, bringing GTI power to the brand's topless icon.

There are no surprises here (apart from its existence, perhaps), with the new 2013 Golf GTI Cabriolet pinching the hatch's styling, features, and performance engine.

As with the regular GTI, the Cabriolet version is driven by Volkswagen's turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 155kW and 280Nm of torque.

The trusty six-speed manual and DSG automatic transmissions are also on the job, giving the GTI Cabrio a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds with both gearboxes.

Top speed is listed at 237km/h for the manual and 235km/h with the auto, and fuel consumption is listed at 7.6 l/100km and 7.7 l/100km respectively.

The GTI Cabriolet gets Volkswagen's XDS electronically-controlled diff as standard, just like the hatch, and its styling and interior features are also identical.

Like the regular Cabriolet, the GTI version gets an electro-hydraulic folding roof that can be lowered or raised in 9.5 seconds, at speeds up to 30km/h.

Australia

The GTI Cabriolet is set to go on sale in Europe in the coming weeks, just in time for the Northern Summer.

Speaking with TMR today, Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling confirmed that the GTI Cabriolet is under consideration for Australia.
