Volkswagen has announced Australian availability of the all-new 2012 Jetta range, replacing the fifth-generation model and completing the company's overhaul of its existing local line-up.

With a new entry price of $26,490 for the 118TSI variant ($4500 less than its predecessor), the Jetta range tops out at $37,990 for the 147TSI Highline.

The previous entry-level variant, the miserly 77TDI, is absent from the 2012 line-up, with the diesel range now starting and ending with the 103TDI. Priced at $34,990, the 2.0 litre diesel is now $1000 more affordable than before.

Mechanical Package

Driving the 118TSI is Volkswagen's 1.4 litre twincharged petrol engine, producing 118kW at 5800rpm and 240Nm of torque between 1500 and 4000rpm.

Combined with either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-spee DSG auto, the 118TSI shuffles to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds.

Fuel consumption for the manual-equipped variant is listed at 6.5 l/100km, and 6.2 l/100km for the DSG model.

Topping the petrol pair is the 2.0 litre four-cylinder 147TSI engine, producing 147kW at 5100rpm and 280Nm at 1700rpm.

Available with a six-speed DSG auto only, the 147TSI hits 100km/h in 7.5 seconds and lists fuel consumption figures of 7.9 l/100km.

In the diesel corner is the 103TDI, powered by Volkswagen's 2.0 litre four-cylinder TDI engine. Power is listed at 103kW at 4200rpm and 320Nm between 1750 and 2500rpm.

Equipped with a six-speed DSG auto only, the diesel's 0-100km/h dash is over in 9.5 seconds, and fuel consumption is a range-best of 5.5 l/100km.

Suspension is managed by MacPherson-type struts at the front, and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

Features and Equipment

The the new Jetta measures 4640mm long, 1450mm tall and 1780mm wide, placing it among the smaller models in the medium car segment. Along with increased overall length, Volkswagen's new small sedan rides on a wheelbase 70mm longer than before.

Inside, the Jetta offers 67mm more legroom in the rear, and rear cargo capacity is listed at 510 litres with the 60/40 split-folding seats in their upright position.

Features for the entry-level Jetta include 16-inch wheels, heated exterior mirrors, air-conditioning with a dust and pollen filter, remote central locking, aux and Bluetooth audio connectivity, a leather multi-function steering wheel and six-way front seat adjustment.

For the Comfortline models (118TSI and 103TDI), standard features include 16-inch 'Navarra' alloy wheels, parking distance sensors, centre armrests, dual-zone climate control and chrome air-vent surrounds.

Stepping up to the 147TSI Highline, standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, 15mm lower sports suspension, headlight cleaning system and chrome exterior accents.

Inside, the Highline gets Vienna leather upholstery, high-end decor accents, front under-seat storage and Volkswagen's RCD-510 radio/CD system.

Standard safety features across the Jetta range include six airbags, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), six airbags, front safety optimised head restraints to reduce whiplash, and height-adjustable head restraints for all three rear passengers.

Also standard, and for the first time in a Jetta, is Volkswagen's Crash Impact Sound Sensor (CISS) system. This system detects crash intensity and deploys the airbags faster than previous systems.
