VOLKSWAGEN GOLF CABRIOLET

Hours after confirming its debut at Geneva next month, Volkswagen has today revealed its upcoming soft-top 2012 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

The new Cabriolet returns to the Golf line after a two (and a half) generation absence, its place in Volkswagen's line-up taken by the similar-sized Eos.

Built on the same platform as the current Golf 6 hatch, itself inherited from the previous Golf 5, the two-door Cabriolet gets an electro-hydraulic folding roof that can be lowered or raised in 9.5 seconds, at speeds up to 30km/h.

As with most convertibles, the windscreen of the Golf Cabriolet takes on a more raked profile, leading to a lower overall roofline.

Up front, the Cabrio gets the new Golf R-inspired headlights, with the addition of the Polo GTI-like daytime running LED lights that are now common on European-market Golf models.

At the rear, the Golf R's dark-tinted LED taillights feature beneath the convertible Golf's short rear deck. In the boot, Volkswagen promises a full 250 litres of storage space.

Like the Eos and Beetle Cabrio before it, the new Golf Cabrio does away with the centre-mounted rollbar that was a standout feature of previous Golf Cabrio generations, replaced with the same protective pop-up bars featured with the Audi A3 convertible.

Although similar in look to the Eos and sharing the same 2578mm wheelbase, with the same interior space on offer, the Golf Cabrio is some 208mm shorter on the outside.

In Europe, the Golf Cabriolet will be powered by four petrol engines (1.2 litre TSI, two 1.4 litre TSI variants and a 2.0 litre TSI) and two diesel engines (1.6 litre TDI and 2.0 litre TDI).

Australia

Speaking with TMR today, Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling confirmed that the Golf Cabriolet will go on sale in Australia later this year, with pricing and specifications to be confirmed closer to launch.

He added that Volkswagen does not expect any issues with offering the recently-updated folding hardtop Eos alongside the new Golf Cabriolet in the small Australian market.
